Mavea Elemaris Water Filter Takes the Gunk Out

Clean and tasty tap water for cheap? Yes please.

Some water filter systems can be a bit hard on the wallet, but there’s no need to miss out on cleaner drinking water when there are affordable water filter pitchers around.

Take this popular Mavea Elemaris Water Filter Pitcher, which provides good all-round filtering for those on a limited budget.

Like everything that tends to come out of Germany, this product is durable, functional and UBER-EFFECTIVE.

And did we mention how funky it looks? For those that like to stand out from the crowd, this pitcher certainly does the job.

Solid Filtering Performance

Not only does it look cooler than most water pitchers, but Mavea’s advanced filter technology will cut down on the most common contaminants in tap water. Remember, pure water is supposed to taste and smell like nothing! So if you’re getting a funny taste or smell, chances are your water is filled with a whole host of contaminants.

The Mavea water filter combines an ion-exchange resin with activated carbon technology to reduce key contaminants in your water, meaning that it will also look, taste and smell much better too.

The ion-exchange resin attracts unwanted particles in tap water and converts them into much healthier ones, including minerals such as calcium and magnesium, thereby softening your water.

In addition, the tiny pores in the carbon catch disinfectants such as chlorine, and decrease the amount of organic contaminants such as benzene and calcium carbonate,  inorganic metals such as copper and mercury,  and pesticides such as atrazine and limescale. That’s a lot of nasties that you don’t have to worry about anymore.

Another bonus is that the Elemaris has a very fine screen filter that stops any residue from the carbon getting into your water. Other filters leave little black specks in your water, but not this one.  Just crystal-clear H2O. The filtering rate is super quick, too, so you can have a full pitcher of pure water in under two minutes.

Many people are also put off by the thought of storing their water in a plastic container, but rest assured that is not a problem with the Mavea. This filter is Bisphenol-A free, which means no synthetic plastic seeping into your water.

How Long Does a Filter Last?

Each of its replacement filters last around two months, filtering on average 300 bottles of water or 40 gallons (151 L).

Personally, we’re a fan of the six-pack of replacement filters on Amazon, which work out super cheap and last for an entire year. The filters are also very easy to insert. All you have to do is plunge the filter in some cold water for a few seconds and give it a gentle shake to remove any air bubbles.

The price for its replacement filters isn’t too bad when you think about how much you spend on bottled water per year. Plus, another great benefit of cutting down on water bottles is that you’re being a lot more eco-friendly – imagine all that plastic wastage you’re saving on!

Different Sizes And Funky Colours

We’ll take the orange one!

The Mavea Elemaris Water Pitchers are fantastically stylish if you want to add a funky twist of color to a boring kitchen, or have an OCD with matching all your appliances to your kitchen decor!

It comes in a range of six shades: eggplant, ruby red, tangerine, green, black and white. We are fans of the eggplant and tangerine ourselves.

You also have a great choice of two different sizes to suit your water filtering needs. There is an extra-large 9 cup version or a smaller Kompakt 5 cup version.

Both are identical in terms of their filtering performance –  the only variation is their water capacity. One thing to keep in mind is that if you have a small UK or European fridge, the big one may not fit in the door. Fridges in the US are typically much larger and as such it will probably slide in quite nicely.

Small Design Touches That Make A Difference

In terms of design, Mavea has sought to make the Elemaris as easy to handle as possible.

  • For one, this pitcher has a pour-through lid that makes it very easy to top up. With other models we tried, it can be a struggle to pry off the entire lid, but not this one! It might not sound like much but it saves a lot of time when you’re whizzing around the kitchen trying to get dinner on the table. Less fidgeting with the lid also means less germs getting into water.
  • Moreover, the fill valve is self-opening as you pour water in and then closes automatically when the reservoir chamber has reached its capacity. The only issue to keep in mind is that overfilling it can cause water to run down the handle.
  • And lastly, other great features include its large soft grip handle that makes it easy to hold when fully filled, as well as a rubber footing that will not only keep the water filter more stable but stop it from scratching your tabletop or spilling onto the floor. Its also great if you have little ones running around.

Easy To Use LCD Display

Drip, drip, drip.

Unlike other pitchers which use a manual sticker indicator system, the Mavea Elemaris has a handy electronic display in its lid.

The display gives a digital reading on the volume of water filtered, the water hardness and the time since the cartridge was last replaced.

We found it really simple and effective, so you won’t be left playing any guessing games or have to keep track of any stickers.

Some Considerations

It’s not a common problem, but there have been reports that the beak on the Mavea Elemaris can tend to get loose. There may also be the odd case where the LCD display  may not work properly after a few months. For most people the display lasts between three to five years, so make sure to keep the receipt at hand just in case such problems arise.

Unfortunately, as most other pitchers, the Mavea Elemaris also does not take out viruses, bacteria or cysts like giardia. So if a deeper clean is wanted, it is better to go for a more complex countertop or an under-the-counter system.

Although this pitcher may not be 100% perfect, it does come close. For the price you’re paying, it’s a solid performer that ticks the most important boxes. Unlike many other water filter pitchers, we love the fact that it can provide a digital reading, is effective in reducing the basic baddies, and makes an attractive addition to any kitchen. Sinky Drinky gives it a stamp of approval!
